Ankle Joint Biomechanics in Flatfoot โ€” Advancing Clinical Understanding

Project Code: 2026/REC0065

We are recruiting volunteers to help us understand how flatfoot affects walking mechanics and plantar pressure distribution โ€” with the goal of improving clinical interventions for the Malaysian population.

About the Study

How does flatfoot affect the way we walk?

This research investigates how flatfoot (pes planus) affects ankle joint biomechanics and plantar pressure distribution during everyday walking. Flatfoot is a prevalent structural condition that can alter loading patterns throughout the entire lower limb โ€” yet its specific biomechanical effects in the Malaysian population remain poorly understood.

๐Ÿฆถ
Foot Posture Assessment A 3D foot scanner will measure your foot arch geometry and classify your foot posture.
๐Ÿ“Š
Plantar Pressure Technology A specialised baropodometric platform captures pressure distribution as you walk naturally.
๐Ÿฅ
Clinical Impact Findings will directly inform orthopaedic interventions and footwear guidelines for flatfoot conditions.
Biomechanical chain reaction
1
Arch Collapse Alters static plantar pressure distribution and baseline gait mechanics
2
Ankle Misalignment Creates measurable angular stress at the subtalar joint complex
3
Kinetic Chain Effects Stress travels upward โ€” affecting the knee, hip, and lower back

Who Can Participate?

Eligibility criteria

We welcome both individuals with flatfoot and those with normal foot posture. If you meet the criteria below, we encourage you to register your interest.

๐ŸŽ‚
Age 18 โ€“ 40 years old

We are recruiting young to middle-aged adults within this age range to ensure consistent biomechanical data across participants.

๐Ÿƒ
Physically active individuals

Participants should be able to walk independently without assistance. No specific fitness level is required.

๐Ÿฆถ
Flatfoot or normal foot posture

Both individuals with flatfoot (unilateral or bilateral) and those with normal foot posture are welcome to join as participants.

๐Ÿšซ
No recent lower limb injury or surgery

Individuals with recent injuries, surgeries, or orthopaedic conditions affecting the lower limbs in the past 6 months are not eligible.

Not sure if you qualify? You can still register your interest and our research team will assess your eligibility during the initial screening session. There is no obligation to proceed.
Study Procedures

What to expect โ€” a simple, 30-minute session

Your participation involves a single visit to our clinical space. Here is exactly what will happen during your session.

1
๐Ÿ“‹
Questionnaire
A short structured interview covering your demographic information, any history of foot or lower limb pain, and current physical activity levels.
โฑ 0 โ€“ 10 min
2
๐Ÿ”ฌ
Foot Assessment
A 3D foot scanner will capture the geometry of your foot arch while you stand still. A posture report will be generated automatically.
โฑ 10 โ€“ 15 min
3
๐Ÿšถ
Walking Trial
You will walk barefoot across the Sensor Medica Freemed baropodometric platform at a natural pace. Multiple passes are recorded for accuracy.
โฑ 15 โ€“ 30 min
4
๐Ÿ“„
Foot Report
After the session, a personalised foot posture report will be generated and shared with you. This is for informational purposes only.
